Extrathalamic modulation of cortical function.

چکیده
THE DEMONSTRATION OF EXTRATHALAMIC CORTICAL AFFERENTS As recently as 25 years ago, it was commonly assumed that essentially all afferents to the neocortex arose from the thalamus, With the development of methods for visualizing noradrenergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic neuronal processes, it gradually became clear that axons arising from subthalamic cell groups that contain these putative transmitters travel rostrally through the brainstem and monosynaptically innervate the neocortex. With the more recent demonstration that acetylcholinergic (ACh) neurons in the basal forebrain project monosynaptically into the neocortex, it is now clear that there are at least four substantial extrathalamic projections to the neocortex. Recently, these afferents have been demonstrated to be much more dense and more highly organized than was initially thought. The existence and nature of these cortical afferents raises major questions about cortical organization and function. Thalamocortical and corticocortical systems appear to be organized to implement both serial and parallel processing of information through modules that are interconnected with precise topography, thus permitting functional segregation.

Functioning of Circuits Connecting Thalamus and Cortex.
Glutamatergic pathways in thalamus and cortex are divided into two distinct classes: driver, which carries the main information between cells, and modulator, which modifies how driver inputs function. Identifying driver inputs helps to reveal functional computational circuits, and one set of such circuits identified by this approach are cortico-thalamo-cortical (or transthalamic corticocortical...
متن کاملEffects of Cortical and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation on Brain Activity in Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain
Purpose: Neuroscience studies suggest that Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is associated with central sensitization, and maladaptive reorganization of the brain; this introduced a new target for LBP treatment. Studies revealed that cortical and peripheral electrical stimulation can be beneficial in regulating brain neuronal activity. However, there is a scarcity of evidence to support the effects ...
متن کاملEEG correlation of the discharge properties of identified neurons in the basal forebrain.
The basal forebrain (BF) is a heterogeneous structure located in the ventral aspect of the cerebral hemispheres. It contains cholinergic as well as different types of noncholinergic corticopetal neurons and interneurons, including GABAergic and peptidergic cells. The BF constitutes an extrathalamic route to the cortex, and its activity is associated with an increase in cortical release of the n...
متن کاملEffect of locus ceruleus phasic electrical stimulation on responses of barrel cortical cells to controlled mechanical displacement in rats
Behavioral and electrophysiological evidences have shown that locus ceruleus (LC) is involved in different tasks including modulation of sensory processing and shift of attention. In the present study, single unit responses of barrel cortical cells was recorded following controlled mechanical displacement of the principal and peripheral vibrissae in adult rats (100 trials of 200 µm deflection f...
متن کاملNeuroprotective Effect of Mitochondrial Katp Channel Opener Upon Neuronal Cortical Brain of Rat Population
Purpose: So far there is no effective drug therapy to prevent neuronal loss after brain stroke. In the present study we studied effects of The Mitochondrial K-ATP channel regulators on neuronal cell population and neurological function after ischemia reperfusion in the rat. Materials and Methods: Rats temporarily subjected to four vessels occlusion for 15 minutes followed by 24 hours reperfusi...
